il Museo storico dei vigili del fuoco

The proposed firefighter exhibition is a unique opportunity to showcase the impact of climate change on firefighting and the measures taken to mitigate it. Emphasizing contemporary and minimalist design, the exhibition will be exclusively hosted on the first floor, encompassing a conventional exhibition space on the right wing, alongside various social areas. The greenhouse component is envisaged as a sensory realm, allowing visitors to experience the dichotomy of a serene, verdant space while concurrently engaging with art that depicts the consequences of climate change on our planet. In addition to educating visitors about the impact of climate change on firefighting, the exhibition will also serve as a platform for community outreach through workshops.

The Academy

The National Fire Academy (Istituto Superiore Antincendi - ISA), is the school for officers and managers  of  the National Fire Service. It is located in Rome. The institutional scope of the ISA is to provide training and lifelong learning for the officers and the managers of the Department of Firefighters, Public Rescue and Civile Defense. The Institute provides also any other activity aimed at spreading the culture in the specific fields of fire safety, technical rescue and civil protection.

The project’s initial concept was inspired by Joseph Paxton’s Crystal Palace. This iconic structure was built in London in 1851 for the Great Exhibition, using a sophisticated framework of cast iron and transparent glass plates. Tragically, it was destroyed by a fire of unknown origin in 1936.

Drawing on the palace’s material usage and the magnificence of its spatial arrangement, the envisioned solution entailed creating a glass enclosure that resembled a greenhouse, serving as a link between the two buildings.

The proposed firefighter exhibition offers a unique chance to highlight the impacts of climate change on firefighting and the strategies to address them. With a focus on modern and simple design, the exhibition will be located exclusively on the first floor, featuring a traditional exhibition area on one side and various social spaces. The greenhouse part is designed to be a sensory experience, where visitors can immerse themselves in a peaceful, green environment while also engaging with artwork depicting the effects of climate change on our world.
